Q: Hello, where did you go to college?

A: My name is powellli. I went to the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China in 2004, majoring in Communication Engineering.

My university is in Sichuan Province, western China, quite far from my hometown Jiangxi Province .

I got really into coding during college and tried to solve problems with it. This led me to become a programmer after graduation.

Q: Where are you from? Which province?
A: My hometown is in Jiangxi Province, the north of Guangdong. It's become famous for its very spicy food.

Q: So why didn't you go to university in Jiangxi, but instead went to Sichuan?
A: I felt what I saw at home was too limited, so I went somewhere quite far away.

Q: When did you join Tencent? Why did you join Tencent?
A: I joined Tencent in 2011 and started working on Tencent Cloud, almost as one of the earliest employees there.
In 2010, I read an article on Facebook that said social networking would be the future, and I was very interested in it. I thought Tencent was China's Facebook, so I only interviewed with Tencent and got in.

Q: Why have you worked at Tencent Cloud for such a long time?
A: I originally wanted to work on social networks, like WeChat and QQ.
But since I had some cloud computing skills, the company assigned me to Tencent Cloud.
Working here has been really challenging, but it's very important. Cloud provides our customers with solid infrastructure, and they also like me a lot.

Q: What are you responsible for at work? What are the challenges and significance of your role?
A: I am currently in charge of Tencent Cloud's computing products, including virtual machines, GPUs, and so on.
The main challenge is that we provide good infrastructure, but customers think it's not enough. For example, they want more operations-related features, which are hard to standardize.
We spend a lot of time on specific[spɪˈsɪfɪk] customer needs. After thirteen years, we know how to handle these.
The biggest challenge now is how to serve customers overseas, such as those in the United States and Southeast Asia.
The significance of this job is that we can help customers solve problems, especially in traditional industries.
Their businesses are different from Tencent’s, but serving the digital systems of traditional industries is more valuable.

Q: What do you think are the strengths and weaknesses of your English skills?
A: I can read. Listening, speaking, and writing skills are quite poor.

Q: What is your goal in learning English?
A: I hope to be able to communicate with others in English.

Q: Is there anything interesting in your hometown?
A: As I mentioned before, my hometown is famous for its spicy food. In addition to this, in my impression, my hometown is a beautiful southern Chinese town with many hills and rivers, and there are all kinds of animals and plants there.

Q: What's the climate like in your hometown?
A: For plants, there is sufficient sunlight and rain. But for people, it's hot in summer and cold in winter, which is sometimes uncomfortable.

Q: How far is your hometown from Shenzhen? When will you go back?
A: My home is about 800 kilometers away from Shenzhen. It takes 10 hours by car, but only 3.5 hours by high-speed rail. I go back once or twice a year because my parents are there.

Q: What's your college major? Why did you choose this major?
A: My major is communication engineering. Because I have always been fascinated by the fact that information can be transmitted quickly to very distant places. It's like magic.

Q: What do you think is particularly interesting?
A: Information encoding and decoding. We can digitize information in a mathematical way to ensure accuracy and prevent eavesdropping.

Q: Is your current job related to these?
A: It's not exactly the same, but there is also a great connection. After graduation, I was a programmer. Now I am a product manager. These are all in the field of informatization and digitization, just like communication engineering.

Q: What's your work experience?
A: I have been working at Tencent Cloud since graduation. At first, I was a programmer and wrote the first line of code for computing products. Then, in order to make the product better, after eight years of work, I became a product manager and gradually became a manager. Now I am responsible for the management of the entire computing product.

Q: What do you think is the difference between being a programmer and a product manager?
A: It's quite different. Programmers need to learn a lot of technical details and have a relatively heavy workload, but most of their tasks are more certain. Product managers need to plan the direction of products more and there are many things involving communication and cooperation. There are many uncertain tasks. Actually, I prefer being a programmer. It suits me better.

Q: What is the most shining thing in your career?
A: The program framework I designed in 2013 is very concise and clear, ensuring the system stability and rapid response over all these years. It is still running online until now. If it's recent, then in 2024 we achieved very good business returns and began to make a large amount of profit.

Q: Who are your family members?
A: I have been married for many years. I have a pair of twin sons. They are eight years old this year and are in the second grade of primary school. My parents live in my hometown.

Q: How do you get along with your children?
A: They like me very much. I will accompany them to the park on weekends. I will tell them historical stories before they go to bed. Occasionally, I will also take them on trips.

Q: When did you meet your wife?
A: My wife is my high school classmate, so it was more than twenty years ago. I started dating her in college, and then we came to Shenzhen together and got married.

Q: What are your hobbies?
A: Outside of work, I do some exercises to keep fit. I often run in the park and do some weightlifting exercises, such as bench press and pull-ups. After several years of training, I now have fairly good physical fitness.

Q: What's your running frequency? How do you stick to running?
A: I run about three to four times a week, five to ten kilometers each time, not very fast. The secret to sticking to running is that you can be very relaxed while running and think about things other than work and life, such as how to invest and learn English.

Q: Do you like reading or watching movies?
A: I especially like it, but in order to exercise, I don't have much time to do these at present. In the past, I would read books on psychology or sociology for more than ten hours a week.
